You’ll also be able to pick one mutation each time you pass here, like regenerating a small portion of health every time you kill an enemy, or reducing the cooldown of some abilities. Each time you progress to another stage, you have the chance to take a breath. This is done in the resting spots between the various levels. Upgrading these can be done with Cells as well. These allow you to unlock extra weapons that you can find during your next try. Another important resource you’ll find are weapon blueprints. BEST WAY TO GET BLUEPRINTS DEAD CELLS UPGRADEYou can use these to upgrade your healing flask, or increase the amount of gold you’ll retain when you die. MutateĮnemies drop the gold you need to buy extra items or open certain doors, but they’ll often also drop Cells. Speaking about health: you’ll come to love these occasional boosts of lifepoints, as taking multiple hits from enemies sees your lifebar depleting at an alarming rate, and healing items are hard to find. Each gives you an option to increase the power of a certain category, while providing a small health restore. You increase your damage output by obtaining scrolls which are scattered around the island. A friendly shopkeeper will offer you some of these sought after weapons for a modest amount of gold. You can find all these items by defeating enemies or looting them from the occasional treasure chest. Lastly, there are two slots reserved for your Survival items, which range from freezing grenades to bear traps to spike-shooting turrets. The secondary slot, Tactics, is reserved for ranged weapons like bows, or more defensive items like shields. You start of with a simple blade, but there is a variety of melee weapons to find on the island, like a high-power but slow-to-wield greatsword or a burning scimitar. Brutality focuses on the blob’s ability to deal melee damage. Luckily for the player, the blob has some tricks up its sleeve: Brutality, Tactics and Survival. But the majority of the islanders has only one goal: stop you from getting away. The blob, for a lack of a better name, is not much of a talker, but is able to interact with some of the friendly inhabitants of the island. What is known is that the prison where you start is located on an island, that appears to be alive, and changes shape each time the character dies. Dead Cells’ premise is simple: escape the island. The player takes control of an unnamed collection of cells, which in turn takes control of a dead body that has been left to rot in a prison cell. You’ll have to learn to adapt to the game’s ever-changing environments, numerous enemies and unforgiving boss fights. The difficulty is certainly there: you won’t make it to the end of this less than 500MB game in just one run. Those who remember this classic will feel right at home here. And again, and again, and again,… Dead Cells, developed by Motion Twin, is a 16-bit roguelike two-dimensional dungeon crawler with a strong Castlevania vibe. I almost expected this line of text to pop up the first time my character bit the dust in Dead Cells.
